Austen Associates designed an urban piazza to accommodate the life-size bronze statue of the famous racehorse Arkle for the Arkle Statue Memorial Fund.
The horse is placed on a podium to the front of an existing Super Valu and small business premises with strong visibility on the approaches from Ashbourne High Street.
Working closely in a multidisciplinary team, including artist, consulting engineer, bronze-maker, and construction contractor the design aims to celebrate the horse and to create a functioning urban space suited to pedestrians and shoppers.
The design proposals include granite paving and kerbing, a linear Limestone bench, steps and handrail, natural stone walls (free-standing and retaining), travertine cladding to the podium, railings and other street furniture including lighting, bins and a bike rack along with new planting.
It is a significant tourist intervention in the Ashbourne streetscape providing a gateway landscape project at the head of the main street that attracts international interest. The Arkle memorial scheme forms part of the entire Ashbourne main street upgrade for which Austen Associates also designed a street tree planting and furniture scheme.
